Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" was a demo for 'From Under The Cork Tree'

As if you don't remember, Fall Out Boy made a triumphant return from their hiatus in February 2013 with the lead single from Save Rock And Roll, “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up).”

However, the song was far from new.

In AP 207 from October 2005, bassist Pete Wentz talked about demos that didn't quite make it on their then-new album, From Under The Cork Tree—detailed in a sidebar titled “If my heart was in a blender, I would mix it with alcohol, razor blades and these unreleased Fall Out Boy demos.”

Apparently, Fall Out Boy entered the studio to record From Under The Cork Tree with 25 songs.

Six demos were discussed, including “I Liked You A Lot Better Before You Became A Fucking MySpace Whore,” “Austin, We Have A Problem” and “Star 67/Intro.”

…And “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark.”

AP described the song as: “Slightly schizophrenic guitars and ominous, pounding drums open up in a wide-open space of yelping melodies. The transitions are a little shaky, but the musical intentions are good.”

Wentz says: “We didn't include this song because we never really got a verse we liked. The chorus is really poppy with still kind of weird timing. I really like the line, 'My songs know what you did in the dark.' It's got kind of a malicious, voyeuristic undertone.”
