Fan Poll: 5 greatest Fall Out Boy songs of all time

For the past 20 years, Fall Out Boy has been one of the most revered bands in the pop-punk scene. Throughout eight records, Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley have pushed the boundaries of rock music and have inherited a cult fandom. Five years since its last LP, the band released its eighth studio album So Much (for) Stardust in late March, which paid homage to the band’s punk roots but ultimately left much room for experimentation.

With more than two decades of tracks, we asked our readers to choose the greatest Fall Out Boy songs of all time. The top five fan picks are ranked accordingly below.

5. “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes”

On Folie à Deux, Fall Out Boy entered into more experimental territory with impulsive tempo shifts, genre and time signature changes and boundary-pushing theatrics. One of the standout tracks on the 2008 record remains “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes,” a stunning guitar anthem flanked by organs and Patrick Stump’s towering vocals. Like so many Fall Out Boy songs, its upbeat melody shrouds a more wistful message.

4. “The Take Over, The Breaks Over”

“The Take Over, The Breaks Over” is Fall Out Boy doing what they do best: flaunting how versatile they are. From its third studio album Infinity on High, this track is full of rollicking choruses that showcase Patrick Stump’s funky vocals. It’s playful, dramatic and everything great about the band.

3. “Sugar, We’re Goin Down

“Sugar, We’re Goin Down” remains a hallmark of Fall Out Boy’s lengthy discography. It’s a cinematic force of a song teeming with Stump’s jazzy falsetto that has gone down in pop-punk history. Plus, the blistering guitar riffs still give us chills.

2. “Thnks fr th Mmrs”

Produced by R&B icon Babyface, “Thnks fr th Mmrs” has remained a fan favorite for a reason: its hooky chorus is era-defining. But the song also expertly dives into the fall of a relationship and the instant gratification of casual sex — especially in the text message era.

1. “Hum Hallelujah”

“Hum Hallelujah” is a sticky, bittersweet standout in Fall Out Boy’s catalog. Not only does the pop-punk outfit provide one of their most addictive choruses, but they also sing a few hardcore bars of Leonard Cohen’s 1984 hymnal “Hallelujah” — and it transforms the track into a soaring epic. How many bands would be able to do that?
