Fans think this new BMTH song’s riff sounds a lot like classic Deftones

Last week, Bring Me The Horizon finally unveiled their new EP POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR.

However, fans quickly noticed that a particular riff in one of their new songs sounds a lot like a classic from Deftones.

Bring Me The Horizon open up their new EP with the hard-hitting track “Dear Diary,” that features some heavy vocals from Oli Sykes and intense percussion from drummer Mat Nicholls. Soon after the EP’s release, however, fans quickly noticed a striking similarity between a riff in “Dear Diary,” and Deftones’ “Swerve City.”

Although the riffs aren’t exactly the same, some fans think Bring Me The Horizon may have lifted the riff from the 2012 Deftones track. Others, however, think the similarities are just coincidence.

Jordan Fish previously shared that artists including Deftones have had a great influence on him over the years.

“Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot and Papa Roach were all huge for me growing up, but Deftones were the standouts,” he said. “And they probably remain my favourite band to this day. I got deep into the really crusty nu-metal bands when I was a teenager – stuff like The Kennedy Soundtrack and One Minute Silence. I was totally hooked by the whole nu-metal scene at the time, and 7 Words really defines that period.”

Back in October, Fish also told NME that Deftones’ White Pony is one of his most influential albums alongside Linkin Park‘s Hybrid Theory.

This isn’t the first bit of controversy to arise since the release of POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR. Last week, Sykes told NME that Amy Lee‘s collab on the new EP came to be after a 2019 lawsuit. Sykes said that Evanescence filed the suit against BMTH after they “ripped off” one of their verses in their Grimes collab “nihilist blues.”

“The weird thing about Evanescence is that we got sued by them on our last record,” Sykes says. “On ‘nihilist blues,’ we ripped off one of their verses. It was subconscious, but when it happened we were like, ‘We’re not even going to argue.’”

Soon after the quote was published, Sykes came forward and said his recollection of the situation wasn’t entirely true. Although Lee was eventually given songwriting credit for “nihilist blues,” an official lawsuit was never filed.

Both “Dear Diary,” and Deftones’ “Swerve City” are available to stream below. The riff in question begins at around the 2:10 mark in the BMTH track.
