10 times 5SOS guitarist Michael Clifford was too wholesome for the world

5 Seconds Of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford turns 24 today, and we thought it was only appropriate to celebrate by honoring the musician’s most wholesome moments.

Clifford is constantly warming our hearts with his quirky personality and amazing musical talent, and 5SOS wouldn’t be the same without his skills.

We’ve fallen in love with Clifford more and more as time has gone on and truly appreciate all he’s given to the scene. You can check out 10 times Clifford was too wholesome for this world below.

1. When he spoke about inspiring people to play music

When Clifford revealed his signature Gibson guitar earlier this year, he spoke about the inspiration behind it, which was partially Joan Jett. He also said he hoped that the guitar got more people into playing music.

“I hope this is the type of guitar that is someone’s first guitar,” he said. “This actual guitar is really inspiring for me—how it’s so light and the look of it and the feel that it has when you hold it inspires you to do something that’s against the grain if that makes any sense. I’d like for people, when they play this guitar, to not feel like they’re constricted by what makes a guitar standard.”

2. This post that showed his weirdo tendencies when performing

Clifford isn’t shy about showing his personality on social media. In one post, he shared a photo of himself creeping to let us know that our worst concert fear is actually true—the artists pay attention to how weird you look in the audience.

3. His adorable engagement to Crystal Leigh

Clifford proposed to Leigh, who he was dating for three years, at the beginning of 2019 and shared the cutest post ever about it. “I was lucky enough to ask the love of my life to marry me in the place it all began for us. In the last 3 years she has helped evolve and shape who I am in ways I could never have imagined. I couldn’t ask for anyone better to spend the rest of my life with. I love loving you,” he wrote. Yes, we’re crying, and we’re not ashamed.

4. When he was “emotionally scarred” while reading thirst tweets about himself

All of 5SOS participated in a BuzzFeed video where they had to read fans’ thirst tweets about them. Clifford had to read more than a few uncomfortable ones, and he definitely didn’t hide that he was shy while reading them, which was wholesome AF.

5. That time he donated money to help a fan’s cat get surgery

Last year, Clifford donated to a fan’s GoFundMe that was raising money for her cat Angel’s surgery. He shared $765, which got the fan past their goal amount and wrote that the band loves “their fans and (their) fans cats.” Honestly, 5SOS are angels.

6. This post of his childhood Halloween photos that made us tear up

Clifford always shares his over-the-top Halloween costumes on social media, but this post containing several baby photos of the guitarist really melted our hearts. He’s seen dressed up as Buzz Lightyear, Batman and more.

7. When he got candid about mental health

Last year after 5SOS dropped Youngblood, Clifford got real about what it was like to have to become a mental health advocate to the public while he was still figuring out his own well-being at the time.

“It happened at a time where I was in a really bad place,” Clifford says. “I would have liked for that to have happened after I had been through it so I could talk about it with the knowledge of how to get through it, but when I was first put into that spotlight of being a mental [health] advocate, I was still so dark in my own head about my problems. I would have liked for that to play out differently.

“We’ve had so many people who support this band,” he continues. “And I’m sure a lot of them struggle with mental health issues. If I can help one person, then this is all worth it. I know that’s cheesy and everyone has said that, but everyone says that for a reason. Because, well, it’s true.”

8. The way he’s always posting about his pets online

Clifford loves animals and has always posted pictures of his dogs over the years. He shares his love for pets and even grieved very publicly last year when one of his dogs died. His love of dogs is just another aspect of his personality that makes us love him so much.

9. When he got relatable about singing to pop music in the kitchen in the middle of the night

Honestly, Clifford is just all of us with this post, and we love him for it.

10. When his first-ever Instagram post was an emo selfie

We can’t forget the early days of 5SOS when Clifford would post super-emo selfies on Instagram that looked like they belonged on Myspace. May these treasures never be forgotten.
