The List on AP: A Band For Every Day

This list is the result of the same creative process that leads to much of what you see in AP: An editor started out making a joke about making an entire calendar with bands that have days of the week in their names. Then someone said, “You should put that on the website,” and then we all laughed it off. But then someone looked off into the distance with a sudden seriousness and said, “You know, that’s not a bad idea.” So here we are. —Tim Karan

Taking Back Sunday
There’s no better place to start this week than with Taking Back Sunday. The Long Island, New York, rock institution are arguably the Saturday Night Live of emo: The band provided a jumping-off point for scene staples like Jesse Lacey (Brand New), John Nolan and Shaun Cooper (Straylight Run) and former Breaking Pangaea frontman Fred Mascherino (the Color Fred). Veteran leader Adam Lazzara and the band (including ex-Facing New York guitarist Matt Fazzi) are working on the follow-up to 2006’s Louder Now.

Hey Monday
You woke up 45 minutes late, you couldn’t find your trademark distressed jeans anywhere and now you’re stuck in traffic behind a car with more annoying bumper stickers than chrome. It’s clearly a Monday morning, and your antidote is coed powerpop five-piece Hey Monday. In September, you might have caught them out with the Cab, and this month they’re out with the Academy Is… and We The Kings.

Tuesday
Sure, we coulda recommended experimental death metal unit See You Next Tuesday here, but we figured if a band have the fortitude to name their band after arguably the least interesting day of the week, Tuesday deserve some credit. While this emo outfit (featuring three former members of the Chicago ska band Slapstick) broke up in 1998, they’re notable for being the last band bassist/vocalist Dan Andriano was in before Alkaline Trio.

Wednesday Night Heroes
For your hump day enjoyment, let us present Wednesday Night Heroes. This Canadian punk band, who are currently romping through Europe, allegedly derived their name from something that Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider (of all people) said in an Edmonton, Alberta, club. He said, “It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, because if you really want to let loose, you’ll do it without concern for tomorrow.” (Snider probably didn’t realize that The Office is on Thursday nights.)

Thursday
The day Thursday is supposedly named after the Greek god Thor (and not the Marvel superhero with an upcoming movie). We’re not sure where Thursday the band stand on ancient deities, but we’re pretty sure Thor would approve of their iconic post-hardcore (especially their recent split EP with Japanese screamo act Envy).

The Friday Night Boys
If you caught Virginia’s the Friday Night Boys on tour with Cute Is What We Aim For, you realize that their sunny pop is sort of a perfect match for kicking off your weekend festivities.

Saturday Looks Good To Me
If it’s 3:32 p.m. and you haven’t put pants on yet, it’s probably a Saturday. And that makes it the best day in the history of ever. Ultra-DIY group Saturday Looks Good To Me provide the perfect soundtrack to those lazy, pants-free afternoons. The main reason? No two of their songs sound anything alike.
