Calling All Captains announced their Equal Vision signing with “Disconnected” back in July. Now, they’re following it up with a video for “Chasing Ghosts” and the announcement of their EP, and they’re doing it exclusively with AP.
The new track was released today, and it touches on the importance of focusing on the future and not letting yourself get inside your own head.
“‘Chasing Ghosts’ has a lot of layers to its meaning, especially for the different members of the band,” they explain. “It encapsulates all of the self-doubt and negative behaviors that go along with always looking in the rearview mirror and knowing that you’re not living in the present.
“‘If you want better, then go get it.’ That’s what I tell myself literally every day,” the band continue. “Strive to be better, [and] work toward bigger goals instead of chasing ghosts of a past that I put on a pedestal. Smoking and drinking as a way to cope with everything doesn’t get you anywhere. This song is a love letter to all those who are stuck in the same cycle of destructive behaviors that come with romanticizing the past.”
The clip explores how strongly the senses are connected to memories.
“The video begins with the main character, Tris, already in a happy memory of a past lover,” guitarist Brad Bremner says. “As it progresses, you see her flashing back through other memories across multiple timelines. She’s discovered that certain stimulants will bring her back to times when she was happier, and they become something she starts to abuse to get that feeling back.
“As you get older, you learn that the hardest relationships to let go of are not the ones that were obviously bad, but the ones where nothing went wrong at all, and it still didn’t work,” Bremner continues. “Tris finds herself always chasing the ghosts—the memories of better times—to help her cope with the present. Nostalgia can be the cruelest drug sometimes. Finally, we were like, ‘Hey, what if we were the song she’s listening to that triggers these memories?’ and at the very end she’s had enough and has to stop the song.”
