10 scene songs that got you through your first breakup
We’ve all experienced heartbreak in one way or another over the years, but none compare to your first breakup and the scene songs that helped you through it.
Picture it: It’s the 2000s, and you’re sitting at your family’s computer spilling your heart out to all of your friends on AOL Instant Messenger about your first breakup. You log on to Myspace to rearrange your top friends and change your profile song so everyone knows just how upset you are. But which song do you choose?

1. Dashboard Confessional – “Screaming Infidelities”
This Dashboard Confessional track, which appears on both debut album The Swiss Army Romance and follow-up The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most, is a heartbreak favorite for anyone, even those who aren’t traditionally Dashboard fans. The song finds lead singer Chris Carrabba remembering intimate memories shared with a former lover before she cheated on him and left him with nothing but a note to remember her by: “I’m reading your note over again/There’s not a word that I comprehend/Except when you signed it ‘I will love you always and forever.’”
2. Taking Back Sunday – “You’re So Last Summer”
This Taking Back Sunday classic off their 2002 debut album, Tell All Your Friends, has continued to be a fan favorite over the years thanks to the timeless, emotional lyrics: “The truth is you could slit my throat/And with my one last gasping breath/I’d apologize for bleeding on your shirt.”
3. The Used – “Bulimic”
The Used gave us “Bulimic” on their debut self-titled album to remind us of the positive outcome breakups can sometimes hold rather than dwelling on the pain that follows when someone exits your life: “I’m about to do all of the things I dreamed of/And I don’t even miss you at all.”

4. Three Days Grace – “I Hate Everything About You”
This track from their self-titled debut album launched Three Days Grace onto every rock radio station imaginable. The simplicity of the song echoed all the emotions heartbroken listeners were feeling, and the hate-filled lyrics have kept this Three Days Grace classic alive all these years later: “Every feeling that I get/But I haven’t missed you yet/Only when I stop to think about it/I hate everything about you/Why do I love you?”
5. Fall Out Boy – “I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me”
From their second full-length, From Under The Cork Tree, Fall Out Boy delivered this cleverly titled song about a girl who lead singer Patrick Stump repeatedly compares to the scent of inexpensive perfume while poking fun at the idea of writing a breakup song: “And I am sorry my conscience called in sick again/And I’ve got arrogance down to a science/Oh, and I’m the first kid to write of hearts, lies and friends now.”

6. Hawthorne Heights – “Ohio Is For Lovers”
This early 2000s emo anthem from their debut album, The Silence In Black And White, threw Hawthorne Heights into the spotlight in 2004 and into our hearts forever. “Ohio Is For Lovers” was a hymn for every teenager going through their first breakup and not fully understanding all of the emotions that went with it: “And I can’t make it on my own/Because my heart is in Ohio/So cut my wrists and black my eyes/So I can fall asleep tonight or die.”
7. blink-182 – “I Miss You”
blink-182 gave every teen their favorite breakup song with the release of their fifth album in 2003. This haunting track about missing someone pulled fans in with the classic Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus vocals over Travis Barker’s ominous drumming while comparing a love to that of an iconic Tim Burton couple: “We can live like Jack and Sally if we want/Where you can always find me/And we’ll have Halloween on Christmas/And in the night we’ll wish this never ends.”

8. The Academy Is… – “Slow Down”
“Slow Down” is one of many incredible tracks off the Academy Is…’ 2005 debut album, Almost Here. The track tells of an overdramatic partner who feeds their significant partner lines that they want to hear, something we can all relate to: “Take back everything you ever said/You never meant a word of it/You never did.”
9. The All- American Rejects – “Gives You Hell”
The All-American Rejects didn’t disappoint when they gave the world “Gives You Hell,” letting every devastated teen yell exactly what they were thinking: “When you see my face/Hope it gives you hell/Hope it gives you hell/When you walk my way/Hope it gives you hell/Hope it gives you hell.”
10. Paramore – “My Heart”
“My Heart” was the punch-in-the-gut final track from All We Know Is Falling, the debut album from pop-punk favorites Paramore. The music captures the sadness echoing in Hayley Williams’ classic vocals. This track opened the doors for future ache-filled Paramore songs such as “All I Wanted,” proving that they’re always there to catch a broken heart.
