Evan Konrad puts a dark twist on alt-pop in new video—watch

Evan Konrad has taken the path less traveled in his alt-pop journey, teaming up with AP to premiere the music video for his latest single, “The Long Way Out.”

One of the latest additions to the Lava Records family, Konrad has his fingerprints on every step of the production process, with only a handful of collaborators assisting here and there.

Balancing quick cuts of a static-engulfed television with shots of his deep gaze into the camera, Konrad matches his unique sound with dark-yet-fascinating videography.

Originally looking to tell the story of “a vanity-filled man fighting to escape the chaos of his own mind,” the meaning behind the video changed for Konrad after the filming was wrapped up.

“I began to realize that it was very much a metaphor to my past as an artist, like a prologue to my future,” he says. “The look, the way I’m dressed, even the style and lyrics of the song all seem to dwell in both an old and new world for me. It wasn’t something I was consciously aware of during the process of shooting. It’s quite a liberating experience to have that documented and showcased in this music video, especially being that it’s my introduction to the world.”

One of the latest singles from his still-nameless debut project, Konrad cites the track as one of the major influences when formulating his ideas for a larger body of work.

“It’s actually the first idea that I started at the beginning of the project,” Konrad says. “‘The Long Way Out’ took the longest to finish. I’ve lived with it for so long.”

Konrad describes his lyrics as “a journey through the act of letting go” and how that process can be seen through rose-tinted glasses.

“When we are unable to accept the changes within ourselves, or the changes in another person, we reach for a connection that no longer exists,” Konrad says. “I wrote this song to acknowledge and work through this within myself. I want it to be a beacon of light for anyone who is looking for the same liberation I sought after.”

Through his new music and discography going forward, Konrad hopes to connect with listeners and give them hope.

“I hope listeners share in this connection and empowerment,” he says. “I want them to know it’s OK to feel these emotions that we hide in the darkness. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. My focus is on building a place where people can feel stronger.”
