Jutes comes to terms with “Everyone Knows” in genre-blending single

Singer-songwriter Jutes is continuing to lead the charge on the no-genre mentality. Blending the flow of hip-hop with the grit of punk like artists such as YUNGBLUD or Machine Gun Kelly, the rising singer is dropping off his latest song, “Everyone Knows.”

This past summer, Jutes released his debut single “Start Over” with Capitol Records. He ended the year with “Sideshow” in November, marking the first taste of his upcoming Overrated EP. Now, Jutes is teaming up with AltPress to premiere the second single, “Everyone Knows.”

Raised in Kars, Ontario, Jutes’ affinity for rock was sparked by his drummer father who led him to Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Later engrossing himself in playing basketball, the artist widened his musical scope by picking up a love of hip-hop from his friends and in turn becoming fascinated with Ludacris and OutKast’s Andre 3000.

He soon turned his focus from sports to film school, enrolling at Toronto’s Humber College. Jutes dropped out after a year, but he didn’t squander that creative flair, having recorded raps on his laptop in his dorm room.

“It was the only way to get away from the depression I was feeling over having paid all this money to go to school and realizing that I didn’t want to be there,” he says. “I love creating shit across the board, but when I started making music, it was a whole different thing. It was my only escape.”

Jutes soon began self-releasing a handful of singles beginning in 2015, breaking out with “Cocaine Cinderella” the following year. Having previously focused more on the hip-hop sound, the singer shifted gears to blending in the rock influences of his youth with the aptly titled “Start Over” last year.

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2018, Jutes went from self-producing to collaborating with a bevy of names, including Avedon (Trippie Redd, Bone Thugs) and Omer Fedi (Machine Gun Kelly, Iann Dior). However, “Everyone Knows” spawned from hang sessions with musician/producers Andrew Luce (GARZI, Christian French) and Miles Wesley.

“I was hanging out with my homie Andrew Luce listening to music, and we decided to make a messy, shitty garage-rock song,” Jutes tells AltPress. “We had also been listening to a bunch of Gorillaz, so naturally, we blended the two vibes. I’ll be honest: The hook was an off-the-cuff freestyle that just felt really good and nostalgic, so I went with it. A few days later, I played it for my friend Miles Wesley, and he grabbed my guitar and started playing that little guitar melody part over the post-chorus.”

As for the track’s lyrical content, Jutes penned it about a woman who wasn’t exactly what she seemed.

“The song is about a past girl who won me over right before flipping the crazy switch and totally rocking my whole world,” Jutes says. “Everyone said, ‘She sucks, dude. You’re way better off without her,’ but obviously from where I was sitting, it wasn’t that simple.”

“Everyone Knows” will join “Sideshow” on the Overrated EP releasing soon via Capitol. Jutes will be dropping new music throughout 2020, and you can check out the new track below and keep up with him here.
