Never Loved are over unrequited relationships in “Down”—watch

Camm Knopp is an indecisive person. Before he started his music career and became the vocalist/lead guitarist of Never Loved, he was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life. He’d played in a few bands, ghost-written songs for other artists and even approached producer Matt Squire (All Time Low, Panic! At The Disco, Good Charlotte). Knopp knew he had a passion for music, but he wasn’t sure how to translate it into a full-time gig.

Knopp and crew channel that same frustrating, unknowing mindset into their most recent qualm—relationships—in their latest single, “Down.” The band have teamed up with AltPress to exclusively release the track.

Initially, Knopp deciding how he wanted to pursue music posed a challenge. “I was going from project to project, and it just wasn’t right,” he says. “I was in college and not having a good time. I didn’t know what I was doing or what I was going to do. I knew what I loved and what I wanted to do, but people thought I was crazy that I wanted to make music.”

Inspired but lacking direction, Knopp recorded a few demos and later sent them to Squire. The producer immediately saw potential and harnessed Knopp’s knack to tap into his emotions. Together, they wrote “Dead Inside” from the band’s debut EP. With “Down,” Never Loved tackle the same uncertainty that comes with love.

“‘Down’ is about feeling torn in a relationship that may or may not be good for myself,” Knopp says. “It reflects on me being indecisive and the mixed emotions I felt. Sometimes I’d say to myself, ‘I love this person. I can’t be without them,’ and other times I’d think, ‘I’m drained. This isn’t good for me. It’s time to move on.’”

Sonically, the track conveys that sentiment of giving but not receiving in a romantic relationship. Knopp compacts the love of an insecure, doting significant other and the built-up anger from a lack of reciprocation in the three-minute track effortlessly.

Faltering between a tone that begs (“I’m always scared that this will fall apart”) and one that demands answers, Knopp soars. Halfway through “Down,” he lets out a blood-curdling howlit’s the apex of his rage. However, the comedown lets listeners know Knopp and Never Loved are searching for a new idea of love.

“Down” follows the release of “Where Do I Go From Here?” in July and their Equal Vision debut, a self-titled EP, in March. Check out the new track below.
