PEARS get “Cynical Serene” on new LP track—listen

Paint-peeling New Orleans hardcore unit PEARS have finally blessed us with word of a new album. The eponymously titled PEARS comes out March 6 on Fat Wreck, and it’s their third full-length, the follow-up to 2016’s Green Star. Because you’re going to ruin your pants waiting for the record to come out, we’re premiering a new track, “Cynical Serene.”

This is a song about cautious optimism?” frontman Zach Quinn offers more than a bit rhetorically. “Maybe not. Not sure it’s the same thing. Anyway, once you hit bottom, there’s nowhere to go but up, right?”

“Cynical Serene” is typically, wondrously PEARS. It’s 139 seconds of punk fury with a vocal breakdown seemingly recorded in scenic Laurel Canyon, California, enhanced by bongloads of righteous boo. And while you may be familiar with the band’s brevity and velocity, you’re going to wonder what happened at the end of the song. (Spoiler alert: That’s where the “serenity” comes in.)

“Cynical Serene” follows up “Comfortably Dumb,” which came out earlier this year, making heads swivel with PEARS’ mix of melody, acceleration and mania. Click that one later if you haven’t already (Seriously man, what’s wrong with you?), and bite into this one.

And PEARS are touring America this spring, so there’s no reason for you to be cynical or serene about the state of rock on the planet. And they’re playing Punk Rock Bowling, too!
