Adam Lazzara recalls being “so scared” during first TBS show on vocals

Taking Back Sunday are teaming up with AP to bring you the first installment of a video series where they reflect on their career thus far. The series is one of many components celebrating the band’s 20-year existence, which also includes a tour and career retrospective album, Twenty.

After years of touring and making music, the band are looking back on their journey together. The first installment takes us to the band’s beginnings—including when Adam Lazzara was too afraid to face the crowd at his first gig singing with the band.

The current members—Lazzara, John Nolan, Mark O’Connell and Shaun Cooper—have been there since the group’s beginning as the act played a critical role in the early 2000s emo scene. They have since had three albums go gold and were recently inducted into the Long Island Music Hall Of Fame, in turn solidifying them as an ever evolving act.

Though it’s been two decades since Taking Back Sunday became a band, they still find it hard to believe how fast time’s gone by.

“It feels strange to say out loud,” Lazzara says. “2019 marks 20 years since I joined Taking Back Sunday, and my life changed forever.”

To further commemorate the band’s time together, they released a compilation of 19 tracks from their seven full-length albums and two new studio recordings, “All Ready To Go” and “A Song For Dan,” titled Twenty.

In this debut installment from the video series, Taking Back Sunday talk about the new release and the band’s humble beginning—including the aforementioned first show featuring Lazzara on vocals.

Lazzara originally joined the band as the bassist, later switching to frontman duties. Given the singer’s knack for impressive mic swinging, it’s hard to believe he would get quite a bout of nerves the first time tackling vocals live.

“First show me singing, too, and I just faced Mark [O’Connell, drummer] the whole time,” he says. “Because even though there were maybe only ten people there—and we were friends with all of them and it was in a living room—I was still so scared.”

The band also touch on the origin of their 20-year logo. They delve into choosing tracks for Twenty and how the album’s new songs came to be. Check out the rest of what the four-piece had to say below.

Craft Recordings is releasing the album-by-album video series where the group will discuss each of their releases. The rest of the series will drop throughout the year, each being unveiled on the birthday of the album it’s dedicated to.

Taking Back Sunday began their worldwide tour earlier this year and will be headed to North America next month and later Europe. They’ll be playing Tell All Your Friends in its entirety at each gig.

However, at stops where they’ll be in the city for two nights, they’ll be doing a double album of either Where You Want To Be or Louder Now (to be decided with a coin flip) along with TAYF. In cities where they’ll only be for one night, the group will be performing their debut album along with fan favorites.

Tickets are available on their website, and you can check out dates below.
