Teenage Bottlerocket are looking to keep it cool with their new album, Stay Rad! The band are teaming up with AP to premiere the new record.

Originally planned to be named The White Album in honor of Weezer and the Beatles, the band opted to name the album after a phrase scratched on a former crew member’s hat.

“It was a phrase on our old tour manager’s hat, and I always thought it was funny,” guitarist Kody Templeman says. “I brought it up to Ray [Carlisle, vocalist/guitarist] because I thought it would be nice to have a silly title like ‘Total.’ He was into it, and the rest is meaningless history.”

Bassist Miguel Chen echoed this sentiment and remembers the hat fondly.

“That thing was way dirty and gross,” Chen says.

Holding references from hallucinogens to horror stories, Templeman says his favorite track acts as a history lesson on black metal.

“I had the title for ‘Creature From The Black Metal Lagoon’ kicking around for many years,” Templeman says. “It was a rip-off of ‘Creature From The Black Leather Lagoon’ by the Cramps. I love a lot of black metal, and I wanted to pay homage to it in a lighthearted way.”

Chen’s favorite track leans more sentimental and happens to be the only love song on the album.

“I wrote ‘I Never Knew’ about my wife, Lily,” Chen says. “It’s a true story. She makes my life way better.”

Despite their lighthearted nature, the album holds a deeper meaning for the band. This is the first album they’ve released (outside of 2017’s cover album Stealing The Covers) since the loss of their drummer, and Ray’s brother, Brandon.

“We definitely kept Brandon in our hearts this whole record,” Chen says. “I’d like to think he’d be pretty fucking stoked on the way Stay Rad! turned out.”
