the pink slips

If the Pink Slips were interior designers instead of a rock band, they’d likely spray paint sigils on a wall they wanted covered or smash a table into bits than just asking someone to put it out on the treelawn. When the world is seemingly overrun by lesser talents copying one of the three or four templates for purported “disruption,” the Los Angeles-based outfit are bringing the soiled grooves and a hell-ton of attitude.

Today we’re premiering the video for the band’s latest single, the white-hot “Seek You.” Frontwoman Grace McKagan tells AP that the song is about “my experiences with seeing the disgust that comes alongside ego. Seeing how ego can drastically change somebody for the worse.”

In the video, she comes off like a contract killer trapped in the body of Marilyn Monroe in a Tarantino-directed remake of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes while the rest of the band conjure an adrenalized groove. The rode-hard redneck introducing the band at the beginning of the clip? That’s Steve Jones, host of the “Jonesy’s Jukebox” radio show on KLOS and guitarist for the Sex Pistols.

“We had so much fun filming the video for ‘Seek You,’” McKagan says about the shoot. “We only had three hours to capture what we wanted. We worked with Connor Ellmann, who has worked on every one of our videos, and his talent for making something that could come across as mundane into a beautiful image never ceases to amaze us. In the video, we wanted to grasp the emotion behind the song, which were feelings of passion and heartbreak.”

Do yourself a favor and keep your ears on the Slips, for they are truly keeping the bar high for tough bands with similarly badassed women (cf. Dead Weather, Saint Agnes). Check them out when they open for the Struts next month and some festivals in early fall with tickets here.
