What you should know about the APMAs Best Video nominees

With the second annual AP Music Awards taking place July 22 (get your tickets now), at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, we thought we would use the weeks leading up to this epic event to give you a category-by-category breakdown of the nominees, so you can be an informed voter. Read on to learn about the Best Music Video nominees, and cast your vote at altpress.com/apmas!

Bring Me The Horizon – “Drown”

At first glance, the “Drown” video seems like a far cry from what we expect of Bring Me The Horizon. The 70s-style performance and pastel blue suits versus the sanitarium audience initially seems dissonant, but once we glimpse into the band’s inner demons, it makes perfect sense. After a brief exorcism intermission, the “Drown” video crescendos into the Bring Me The Horizon you know and love.

A Day To Remember – “End Of Me”

“End Of Me” is about more than a kid on the fringe; it shows us how our environment shapes us, even at its worst. A Day To Remember’s melancholy video showcases the dark desperation present in their song. By far the saddest story of the Best Video nominations, the “End Of Me” video is one of their best, powerful right up to its incisive ending.

Fall Out Boy – “Centuries”

“Centuries” was a smash success both in the scene and on mainstream radio. Fall Out Boy needed a video to match it, and this Romanesque epic is definitely up to task. The narrative paints the band as the underdogs in a Coliseum battle, before some meager means make our boys the winners once again.

Modern Baseball – “Your Graduation”

“Your Graduation” is a fever dream of high school movie motifs, from spilled red SOLO cups at house parties to waking up in your girlfriend’s twin bed in a pink-decorated room. As Brandon Lukens recounts on love gone awry with the simple passion of a diary entry, this video still proves triumphant when we see all the fellow kids scorned come together to sing this anthem and leave the less palatable memories behind.

PVRIS – “St. Patrick”

Unlike the other nominees, there’s no distinct narrative in the “St. Patrick” video. But a montage of dimly lit scenes (with some help from a black umbrella and mirror in the hands of frontwoman Lynn Gunn) shows off why PVRIS’ aesthetic is so appealing when coupled with their sound. And honestly, we’d watch Lynn Gunn spin an umbrella for hours.

Set It Off – “Why Worry”

The anthemic church choir chorus in “Why Worry” won Set It Off a best song nomination, so why not bring the video to the house of God? The rallying cry brings together both the saved and damned, even when evil tries to intervene. With Cody Carson as pastor, we’d convert.
