Frank Carter describes “Crowbar” as a “mission statement” for his band

British punk rockers Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes are teaming up with AP to premiere the fourth installation of their Behind The Album video series for the band’s third full-length, End Of Suffering.

In the video, frontman Frank Carter, guitarist Dean Richardson and the producers of the album share the creative process as well as the central message of their hit single, “Crowbar.”

“With this tune, it’s about being yourself,” Carter explains. “But it’s also about society, your family, education, even your friends and peers—they all have a different perspective of what is right and wrong in the world. The way we all live is not acceptable for other people, but the fact of the matter is no one can ever tell you how to live. The minute you start living in someone else’s rules, it’s the quickest route to unhappiness.”

With a message that stays true to the heart of punk rock, “Crowbar” most importantly serves as a personal life adage for Carter.

“It was more a mission statement to myself, more of a stark reminder to be yourself, go explore, do whatever the fuck you need in life,” he says. “And while you’re doing it, don’t worry. You’ve got one life, so you better fucking enjoy it, and you may as well enjoy it doing whatever it is you want to do—love whoever you want, kiss whoever you want, listen to whatever music, dress the way you want—stop living in other people’s guidelines of what they think is right for you.”

On top of the proverbial essence behind the song, Carter mentions that “Crowbar” also captures a natural progression from their past efforts, and it only made sense for the song to be a general “mission statement” for the band itself.

“It was always gonna be a mission statement for us,” he adds. “Not just lyrically, but musically it was the easiest transition from Blossom to Modern Ruin into future Rattlesnakes.”

End Of Suffering is available now here, and you can watch the full interview below.
