Even Jason Voorhees knows how important face masks are in a new PSA

Friday the 13th villain Jason Voorhees is taking a break from slaughtering teenagers and camp counselors to talk about safety during the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of a new PSA video by Ogilvy Health and the Chimney Group, the horror villain is asking people to mask up to protect themselves and those around them.

No one really knows how to wear a mask as well as Voorhees. This detail makes him the perfect individual for this latest PSA. Ogilvy Health and the Chimney Group are asking citizens of New York, and across the country, to do their part as the pandemic continues and wear protective face masks.

In the PSA, Voorhees manages to make a dark reality a bit more lighthearted while also discussing good health and safety practices.

Within the video, the Friday the 13th villain can be seen roaming the streets of New York. While passing famous landmarks, Voorhees frightens onlookers with his horror movie mask and even fails to hail a cab.

“It’s not easy,” Voorhees says in a voice-over. “The mask kind of makes people feel uncomfortable. I wish everyone could see me for who I am. I’m just trying to fit in. I know, the whole chainsaw thing, I get it. But behind the mask, I’m just a regular guy.”

Ogilvy Health and the Chimney Group hope that this PSA helps bridge the gap between pop culture and reality.

“Wearing a mask has proven to be an easy and important way to stem the spread of the coronavirus, yet many New Yorkers still aren’t doing it,” the statement reads. “This is especially true of younger people who may feel invincible to COVID-19. How can we get them to pay attention to this life-saving message? Tap into pop culture and entertain them. Don’t preach. Don’t fear-monger. Do the opposite. Make them smile, engage and share with their peers. As the tri-state area begins to open, Toby Trygg, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy Health, aligned with the talented folks at @chimneygroup to help create this timely PSA.”

New York has faced over 397,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and over 31,000 deaths since the pandemic began. As New York starts to re-open, this PSA with Voorhees is a reminder to New Yorkers, and those around the globe, to continue to practice good safety measures. Wear your masks and help keep infection rates down.

This week, various states across the United States have seen massive spikes of confirmed coronavirus cases as they continue to phase out of lockdown.
