10 times Jack Black gave us a much-needed laugh while stuck at home

One unexpected aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that many celebrities are doing their part to help those in need. Some have put on virtual events to benefit nonprofits and organizations that are providing services and assistance to the people who are on the front lines and are the most vulnerable. Others have led campaigns to make sure the local businesses we love remain intact so they can be present in a post-pandemic future. There have even been some who have become leaders in the effort for social justice and racial equality as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Then there are stars such as Jack Black who are doing their best to make us laugh during these crazy, tenuous and uncertain times.

Through social media, Black has been utilizing his goofy and hilarious antics to give us a much-needed dose of laughter. Because of this, we’ve decided to make a list of 10 things he’s done to make us cackle.

TikTok arrival

It was only going to be a matter of time until Black took the latest social media app by storm, and that’s exactly what happened in March. The short video that signaled Black’s arrival to TikTok has him wearing a cowboy hat, which is a look we’ll revisit later in the list. He also has cowboy boots on and sports skintight boxers while doing a well-rehearsed dance consisting of spins, kicks, twirls and sheerly graceful movement. The way Black moves makes the clip funny as hell, especially when he runs toward the camera like a madman making a goofy face. 

Singing in a video game

The sequel to the 2017 virtual reality adventure video game Psychonauts In The Rhombus Of Ruin, Psychonauts 2 is going to be released in 2021. There have been a few trailers to help build up the anticipation. In July, Black sings in the freaky-looking “Brain In A Jar” trailer that is quite the visual experience. The Tenacious D frontman’s iconic storytelling voice soundtracks the clip featuring actual gameplay as the main character Raz travels through a brain into a concert. The epic vibe Black brings to a comical video game via his singing makes it pretty funny. It’s almost as if he’s morphing himself into a crooning lounge singer. 

Nacho Libre PSA

Numerous medical professionals all over the world have stressed wearing a mask to help protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. It also aids in helping to contain the virus and flatten the curve of cases so we can return to some normalcy. Black helped get the word out by wearing the garb from his 2006 comedy Nacho Libre in a hilarious PSA for the #YourActionsSaveLives movement.  Watching him jump into a swimming pool for no reason is comical because of the sheer absurdity involved. It’s a funny take on an important issue that we should all be aware of.

Hanging with Devo and skating with Tony Hawk

In December 2018, Black started his own YouTube channel called JablinskiGames. He posts videos about gaming while also including other cool stuff. In May, he hung out with Mark Mothersbaugh from new-wave legends Devo at his Los Angeles recording studio. He then followed that up by skating with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk. Black jams with Mothersbaugh for a rendition of Devo’s “Freedom Of Choice,” and he also plays the remastered versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. The best part of the video is definitely watching Black try to ride an actual skateboard. 

May The 4th Be With You

On the same YouTube channel, there’s also a special May 4 episode. Why so special? Because if you’re a Star Wars fan, you know that May 4 is practically a holiday. Black’s Star Wars fandom is well documented, and he starts the episode by saying, “We have to stay strong in these times, like a Jedi Master.” Then he proceeds to wave around a lightsaber in the middle of a halfpipe. There’s also a dancing stormtrooper over to his left who’s eventually pushed away by use of the force. 

Red Dead Pew Pew Pew

In the same episode, Black proceeds to play the Western shooting video game Red Dead Redemption. He gives hilarious commentary while having a fun time (“So now I know I have to kill,” he resigns after being shot multiple times by the enemy). You can watch it all here, but here’s a quick clip of him playing quick draw while wearing a fake cowboy hat for ideal prior viewing.

Back over on TikTok, Black kept it simple in April by participating in the #BlubChallenge. It’s yet to be seen if the challenge has become a craze yet, but Black’s consistency is impressive. He looks like a grouper with air going through its gills.

Jumping up and down in slow motion

A few days later in April, Black put out his most epic TikTok to date. He’s joined by his sons in a slowed-down series of jumping up and down. His youngest son, Thomas, also takes part in the #BlubChallenge. What makes it epic is Mr. Loco’s “Hombre Religioso” providing the soundtrack to the clip. 

Pandemic singing

Boredom can definitely ensue while you’re inside for long periods at a time. Especially when there’s absolutely nothing to do. Black exemplified this by rehearsing the past two days of “pandemic singing” in a soulful and funky way. How can you blame him? He’s bored out of his mind.

“Don’t Blow It, Kage”

Black and Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass collaborated with Jack White on a new track called “Don’t Blow It, Kage.” The music video was filmed with both Black and Gass in different locations to accommodate social distancing. The premise of it centers around Tenacious D getting a killer gig at a private party thrown by White. By the end, White wants Gass to join his band because he played so well. The funniest part is definitely the inclusion of the famous White photo from him watching a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field.
