Gerard Way releases new song, working on first album in four years

Can it be? Gerard Way walked away from his comic empire and his tanker-sized coffee maker long enough to bless our earbuds and Blueteeth with a new song, “Baby, You’re A Haunted House.”

The last time we heard from Way, he and former bandmate Ray Toro delivered two tracks for a Record Store Day 2017 release (“Into The Cave We Wander” and “Pogi’s Cavern”). He teased the new tune earlier this week, and now it’s finally here.

Just in time for the
real most wonderful time of the year, “Baby, You’re A Haunted House” is a perfect mix of pop melody and fuzz-pedal worship. Think of your favorite indie-pop band, all covered in backpacks, barrettes and Sanrio characters—playing through Motorhead’s backline.

The song would be the perfect theme song for a Saturday morning kids show (you know, before such staples were reduced to infomercials for toy companies) that comes on right before the intergalactic bandstand variety program, Pink Station Zero. Recorded a few months ago, in his home art studio/recording facility, the song features Way, 21st century stunt guitarist Ian Fowles, Electric Centurion Mikey Way on bass and Tom Rasulo on the drums.

“I wrote a song called ‘Baby You’re a Haunted House’ about all our inner ghosts and demons and what it feels like being in love and having to deal with your own internal horror show.” Way says in a statement. “I tried not to really overthink it too much as I really wanted to start getting music out into the world again and sharing my art.”

The haunted house was built by a model maker named Damien Webb, and it kind of inspired me to put the song out for Halloween, as it seemed fitting with the holiday. I hope you enjoy the song.”

All that’s missing are the party invites for Gomez and Morticia, Jack and Sally, Mike and Eleven, Wilhemina and Miriam, Hugh and Olivia Crain, the Joker and Harley and all of the long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night on the guest list with multiple plus-ones.

Oh yeah: We’re hearing rumors that the band o’ bones you see performing in the “Baby” video clip—directed by the v. awesome Claire Marie Vogel—might include Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse, comic author Jon Rivera, Evan Rachel Wood, members of twenty one pilots and one lucky-as-hell FedEx employee arriving at the right place at the end of his shift. But we think Vogel just called up some of her friends.

If you think this song is just a holiday fluke and rock ’n’ roll has lost Way to the world of comics and animation, well, you better find another doomsday prediction. Rumor has it Way has a record in the works, slated to be completed and released sometime next year. See, even if you tear your heart out of your chest cavity, you’ll stay in love with Way somehow…
