Hear a new Gerard Way song in the ‘Umbrella Academy’ season 2 trailer

We’re totally down with the demos on his SoundCloud account. But we’re more stoked to tell you about Gerard Way‘s new single. “Here Comes The End” appears in the second season of The Umbrella Academy, which starts on Netflix July 31.

“I was originally inspired to write this track when series one of Umbrella Academy was being shot, says Way. “By the time I finished it, 2020 was in full swing, the world had taken a profound turn and the song was finished in a surreal new reality.”

“Here Comes The End” finds Gerard Way making good on the same kind of inspiration that made his 2014 solo album Hesitant Alien an essential listen. The fact the song is heralding the release of The Umbrella Academy’s next season makes it even sweeter. Way recorded versions of ’60s hits by the Turtles (“Happy Together”) and Simon and Garfunkel (“Hazy Shade Of Winter”) for the previous season  Imagine Hazel and Cha-Cha shaking fistfuls of Pixy Stix into their faces as they cruise the streets in a convertible. We wonder what (or who) is in the trunk. A badassed oranda goldfish on a mission? Honestly, we have no spoilers. But we do have big love for Gerard Way’s new track. Oh, and we heard a rumor you are going to love this song before the show airs.

UPDATED: JULY 8, 2020, 12:12 P.M. ET

Following the release of the trailer earlier today, Gerard Way has released the full version of “Here Comes The End.” “Here Comes The End” is a garage-rock throwdown somewhere between the Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed, mid-90s Primal Scream and maybe a hint of the Mothers Of Invention’s “Trouble Comin’ Every Day.” Vocalist Judith Hill delivers a performance that makes you sweat and give you chills. Joining her and Way (vocals, guitar) on this retro-rock jam of the future are Ray Toro (bass, guitar), Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards, synth) and Tom Rasulo (drums). The song was produced and mixed by Doug McKean, and recorded at Gerard Way’s in-home facility Milk Friends.

Gerard Way “Here Comes The End” lyrics

They took a photograph
Of the place you hid
You’re never gonna find what you’re looking for
And you’re never gonna run from the thing you did
Is it true?
Here is me looking at you

I’ve got a broken mask
A light I’ll never need
My finger on the button if you gotta ask
Cuz we got a love that’s bigger than World War Three
Is it true?
Here is me looking at you

The clock is moving
Hands to midnight
Can we get through this?
While the walls come down we all pretend

Here comes the end
Here comes the end
(Now can you feel can you feel it)

The time is running out
The days are moving fast
The riot squads are restless and there’s no more light
Just the creeping paranoia and the sleepless nights

Look away
Cuz they got nothing to say
The clock is moving
Hands to midnight
Can we get through this?

While the walls come down we all pretend
Here comes the end
What will we do then?
After midnight
Can we get through this?
Will we all fall down? Well that depends

Here comes the end
(Now can you feel can you feel it)
Here comes the end
(Now can you feel can you feel it uh huh)
Here to tell ya

Well that it’s time to stand up
Cuz we won’t give in
Well yeah everybody get through this
We’ll all get through this
(Now can you feel can you feel it)

Here comes the end
(Now can you feel can you feel it)
Here comes the end
(Now can you feel can you feel it)
Well now, everybody get through this
We’ll all get through this
