Gerard Way is related to Joe Rogan and they “don’t know each other”

Gerard Way has been pretty open with fans over the years, letting them into the worlds of My Chemical Romance, his solo project, The Umbrella Academy and more. However, one fun fact concerning Joe Rogan has been lost on the internet—until now.

Filmmaker/actor Kevin Smith recently joined Rogan on his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, for episode #1372. While there, Smith did a solid for Way and confirmed what the singer had always been wondering: They are in fact related.

“I gotta ask a question on behalf of somebody else,” Smith begins. “Your grandmother named Josie—Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance…” ”Yeah, we’re related,” Rogan interjects.

“That’s what he said,” Smith continues. “I’m [talking] to Gerard, and he goes, ‘I don’t have 100% confirmation on this, but I’m pretty sure Joe Rogan is my cousin because my Aunt Josie was his grandmother.’”

The connection means Rogan is also related to Gerard’s brother and MCR bandmate Mikey Way. Rogan, who is best known for his podcast, Fear Factor, comedy and as a UFC commentator, goes on to further blow our minds by saying they don’t really know each other well.

“Yeah, I don’t know him, but we’re cousins,” Rogan says. “How crazy that two people in the same family became super fucking famous and don’t even—,” Smith begins. “Yeah, we don’t know each other,” Rogan says with a laugh.

Smith ends the exchange by suggesting he bring Way on the podcast. This actually isn’t the first time this has been suggested or the first time their familial relation has been revealed by the internet.

Back in 2014, Way revealed they were cousins in a Reddit AMA introduction. Soon after, a user tweeted at Rogan, “Please Interview your Cousin @gerardway. I THINK ITS TIME FOR YOU DUDES TO KNOW EACH OTHER!” Rogan replied, agreeing, “That’s actually a very good idea.”

More on Gerard Way and Kevin Smith

While Way hasn’t joined Rogan on his podcast (yet), he has appeared as a guest on Smith’s Fatman On Batman. Their continued crossing paths also make it no surprise that Way is reportedly collaborating with the filmmaker on the upcoming Clerks 3. According to Slash Film, Smith revealed the news while currently on the road promoting the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

If true, Clerks 3 won’t be the only Smith film creation Way has witnessed. Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn is also a huge fan of Way’s work and previously opened up about an experience on the Yoga Hosers set. Quinn starred alongside Lily-Rose Depp in the Smith-helmed film.

“So I was going over to the monitor after we filmed the scene, and Gerard Way was there,” Quinn told CBR.com in 2016. ”And I was like, ‘Wait, were you here the whole time? Were you watching me do what I like?’ That’s so surreal, because for the longest time, he was everything to me. I still look up to him so much. I think he’s the most amazing person, but he was my everything, and I would die for them at that point in my life, let alone die to meet them. Then he was there, watching me act.”

The actress has also previously opened up on MCR being the best gig she ever saw as well as her love of The Umbrella Academy back in 2016.

“My dad’s love for comics will never even slightly compare to anyone’s love for them, let alone mine, but yes my love of the comic world definitely stems from him,” she told JustJared. “The first one I really ever got into was The Umbrella Academy series written by Gerard Way, but that wasn’t because of my dad, that was because I was incredibly emo and I felt it was my emo duty to follow everything Gerard Way had ever done. So it started out by me paying homage to my emo king, but ended up just me really falling in love with the comics.”
