Good Charlotte discuss their inspirations, origins and rise to fame

In the latest APTV MI Conversations Series video, hosted by Ryan J. Downey, Dean Butterworth and Joel Madden talk about their musical inspirations, the beginning of Good Charlotte and the band's rise to fame.

The two have wildly different backgrounds. While Butterworth grew up in England, Madden and his brother grew up in a rural town outside of Washington, D.C. “We were slow to warm up, we were timid kids,” says Madden.

Butterworth says he was inspired to drum by his stepfather, and went on to work with many musicians before Good Charlotte, including Morrissey and the Cab. Madden was more sheltered growing up and saw his first concert, Beastie Boys and the Roots, when he was 15 years old. Then, he and his brother were motivated to create the band that eventually became Good Charlotte.
