Grammy eligibility deadline pushed up due to earlier TV air date

Want to win a Grammy? Make sure you pay attention to these changes first.

For artists looking to submit their work to the Recording Academy, there’s been a bit of a change in the timing surrounding the event.

On Monday (March 25), the Academy announced that any artists who want to potentially be recognized at the 2020 Grammy Awards must submit their work before August 31, 2019. This is the first time the goalpost has been moved in the last nine years, and the date has now been moved one month ahead of the old one.

The submission cutoff date has been changed due to the date that the awards show is being televised. In an effort to avoid competing with the Oscars on TV on February 9, 2020, the Grammys decided to instead air the award show two weeks earlier on January 26, 2020. This cuts down on competition for the two presentations.

This is only the second time in the history of the Grammys that the deadline has changed from its normal September 30 date, and now both times the alterations can be attributed to a desire to avoid conflicting TV scheduling – a fine reason, of course.

If artists want to be a part of the ceremony or have their music under consideration for next year’s award show, they’ll have to get hustling and get it out before August, which might now be a bit frustrating for the artists working on the earliest stages of their music.

Luckily, there’s still plenty of time left until then, and a whole summer of hits to get through. Hopefully this isn’t bad news, however, and some of our favorite artists have to forfeit consideration at the Grammys next year due to conflicting schedules like this. We’ll have to wait and see how this all shakes out, of course. It’s too early to make any sort of predictions.
