Grammy recap: Arcade Fire, Muse win; Paramore, Kings Of Leon lose
The 53rd annual Grammy awards were last night, and as has become typical in recent years, there were some left-field winners—and some seemingly shoe-ins left going home emptyhanded.
The biggest story of the night had to be Montreal's Arcade Fire (pictured), who took home the golden gramophone for Album Of The Year, beating out the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga. The win came after a blistering performance of “Month Of May,” and immediately following their acceptance speech, the band took the stage once more and closed out the program with “Ready To Start.” Arcade Fire did come up short in two other categories, however—Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Alternative Music Album—they lost both to the Black Keys. (The Ohio natives also won a third statuette in the “Best Recording Package” category, as well.)
Paramore lost the first award of the night, Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, to Train's “Hey, Soul Sister,” but that didn't stop Hayley Williams, Taylor York and Jeremy Davis from presenting the Best Rock Album award to Brit-rockers Muse (their only trophy of the night).
Dave Grohl collected his eighth Grammy as Them Crooked Vultures' “New Fang” won Best Hard Rock Performance (the award was Josh Homme's first and John Paul Jones' second).
Even though Green Day didn't release a new studio album last year, they still left with some gold under their arms, as the Broadway version of American Idiot took home the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
The recently disbanded White Stripes still managed to snag a trophy for one of the two categories they were nominated in, Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package for last year's Under Great White Northern Lights live album.
Nominated for two awards, Kings Of Leon returned home with none to their name; other nominees completely shut out include Slayer, Lamb Of God, Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells, Mumford & Sons, Florence + The Machine and Justin Bieber.
