Billie Joe Armstrong reacts to Vince Staples' Green Day-ish album art
Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong sees your album art, Vince Staples, and he loves it! The pop-punk king shares the face of the rapper’s new album on Instagram, adding his voice to the chorus of approval for the Cutthroat Boyz member’s third studio effort, FM!, released last week. But does the album cover look similar to a classic Green Day sleeve?

“I love this,” Armstrong straightforwardly states of the cover. And, indeed, its artistic callbacks to the vivid art of Dookie appear to be no joke. Staples’ sleeve cleverly cribs some elements from the 1994 Green Day cover, originally designed by East Bay artist Richie Bucher. Similarly to FM!, Dookie was also Green Day’s third major release.
Staples’ cover art was crafted by Japanese artist Verdy, and it depicts a surreal scene where “the album title [is] surging out of the sea to create a tidal wave that’s headed towards a beach filled with an array of zany characters,” per NME.
Meanwhile, the members of Green Day are also showing love to baseball fans, playing in death metal bands, getting called out by Sex Pistols‘ Johnny Rotten and maybe thinkin’ of all that extra cash they made. (Not necessarily in that order.)
Staples’ FM! just dropped Nov. 2 and features guest spots from Tyga, Earl Sweatshirt, Kamaiyah, Jay Rock, E-40 and more. It follows the rapper’s 2017 sophomore album Big Fish Theory and breakout 2015 debut Summertime ’06.
