It looks like Grimes and Elon Musk can’t actually name their baby that

Earlier this week, Grimes and Elon Musk announced the arrival of their first child. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO announced the birth of their son on Twitter. Following the announcement, Musk also shared the name of their baby boy which has left many scratching their heads. The internet was set on fire when the couple revealed their child is named “X Æ A-12 Musk.”

Now, it appears that Grimes and Musk may have to change the name of their child for legal reasons.

After it was revealed their baby boy is named X Æ A-12 Musk, fans quickly went to work to try and understand the meaning and pronunciation of the name.

So far, the most accurate of guesses is that it is pronounced “X Ash Archangel Musk.” Musk liked a tweet that suggested this idea on May 4.

Following this, Grimes took to social media and attempted to clarify the meaning of the name even further. Although she confirmed that the Archangel part is accurate, she left even more of us confused.

•X, the unknown variable
•Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)
•A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent

(A=Archangel, my favorite song)

Apparently, “X” is an unknown variable in relation to the name of the child. “Æ” symbolizes love or artificial intelligence. “A-12” is in reference to the couple’s favorite aircraft. The “Archangel” guess was correct and it is also her favorite song. 2020 is the year of the rat in the Chinese Zodiac so that’s most likely what the rat emoji is for.

Someone on Twitter was quick to respond to Grimes’ tweet and addressed the rather large elephant in the room regarding the child’s name.

“You realize this is a human child and not an EP, right?,” Twitter user @mascdonna says.

Grimes replied to the tweet and stated why her son has been given the unique name.

“I think it sounds like the name of the main character in the story,” Grimes says. “I hope he vibes with that. Ok, going back into the pain/ beauty reverie for some time, just came on to add my thoughts. Peace to all.”

Now, it appears that under California state law, the new parents may not be able to give their son the unique name after all.

According to TMZ, the name is in violation of California law as it is illegal for a name to include numbers or symbols. This is according to a supervisor at the Department of Public Health Vital Records Office in Los Angeles where the baby is believed to have been born. The law states names can only include the 26 letters in the English alphabet.

So, theoretically, the newborn can be called X Æ A-12 Musk, but it will legally not be allowed on his birth certificate. The new parents also have the option to remove the numbers and symbols altogether so it’s spelled using only the English alphabet.

As of now, Grimes and Musk have not made any statements regarding the legal problems surrounding their son’s name. However, all of this could be Musk and Grimes just having some fun on the internet. They may be keeping the privacy and the actual name of their child a secret for now.
