Guatemala Congress bans Marduk for being "satanic"

Guatemala Congress is currently facing criticism following their decision to ban Swedish black metal band, Marduk, from entering the country, citing that the band’s content could be viewed as “satanic.”

Per a report from Billboard, Guatemala’s government recently voted that anyone involved with the black metal act would be banned from the country. A decree that won with a vote of 87 to 13.

Oliverio Rodas, an independent lawmaker who was in favor of the band’s ban, said that Marduk’s music was offensive to “the morality of the Christian people of Guatemala.”

Of course, the vote hasn’t gone over well with all of the parties involved.

According to lawmaker Eva Monte Bac, who voted against the band’s ban from the country, has cited that the newfound ban of Marduk has violated the country’s constitution.

Bac also went on to call those lawmakers who voted for the ban “hypocrites,” asking why the government would allow reggaeton music that features lyrics that are misogynist or promote drug trafficking in the country, but not allow Marduk’s music.

Marduk were formed in 1990 as they were “intent on creating the most brutal and blasphemous metal act ever,” according to their site. Over the course of their discography, they have released tracks such as “Sex With Satan,” “Frontschwein” and “The Blond Beast.”

As Billboard reports, the band was scheduled to perform in Guatemala on Oct. 11, but with its recent ban from the country, it doesn’t appear that will be happening anytime soon.

Marduk will be hitting the road late this year on their second Viktoria Europa run. Joining the band on the upcoming winter run is Archgoat, Valkyrja and more.
