The new collaboration is off of MOD SUN’s forthcoming John Feldmann-produced album.

Earlier this year, MOD SUN joined forces with John Feldmann for his upcoming album. So far, fans have gotten a few tastes of the forthcoming LP with the tracks “Bones” and “Karma.”

Amidst working on MOD SUN’s new music, Feldmann also entered the studio with Lavigne who is recording her first new material since 2019’s Head Above Water. Throughout the process, Lavigne has been collaborating with MOD SUN and even Machine Gun Kelly on her new music.

Once writing and recording for her new album began, both MOD SUN and Lavigne teased a possible collaboration could be on the way. Back in December, MOD SUN alluded to the collab on Twitter when he shared photos of the trio in the studio together.

As well, Lavigne also hinted that a “fun surprise” was on the way in early January.

“New music coming out 2021,” she said. “Fun surprise top of year in Jan.”

Finally, on Jan. 1, the duo confirmed that their new song “Flames” was officially on the way. The track appears on MOD SUN’s forthcoming album.

Now, the wait for “Flames” is finally over. The punk rock anthem opens up with Lavigne and a haunting piano before heavy rock guitars and percussion kick in along with MOD SUN’s distinct vocals.

MOD SUN shares that “Flames” has a deeper message that goes beyond the powerful vocals and punk rock sounds fans hear on the track.

“Avril Lavigne has one of my favorite voices in music,” MOD SUN says. “It’s so strong and confident, yet filled with emotion and one-of-a-kind inflections that only her voice can do. This song holds a lot more weight than meets the eye. There’s a very deep message within it.”

As well, Lavigne further teases that “Flames” is just the beginning. Fans can expect to hear even more from the duo in the future.

“Mod and I had an immediate connection from the first day in the studio,” Avril Lavigne says. “He’s an incredible artist and producer. This is the first of many. Proud of what we made with ‘Flames.’”

Last week, the duo also confirmed that Machine Gun Kelly has also been working in the studio with them. Lavigne recently shared a few behind-the-scenes photos in the studio. MGK can be seen seemingly tracking some vocals in the recording booth, hinting that another collab may be in the works.

“So are we ready for new music in the new year or what? Lemme know…..”

Back in January, Travis Clark shared that he was actually working in the studio with MGK and Lavigne. The We The Kings frontman exclusively told Alternative Press that the trio collaborated together on some new music. However, it’s unknown if this project will appear on Lavigne’s upcoming album.

“[With Avril], she was like, ‘Hey, I see that you post pictures with your buddy Machine Gun Kelly. Do you think you would want to write?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah!’ So I texted him. I was like, ‘Yo, you want to work on a couple [of] songs with me and Avril for her record?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely.’ So that all parlayed and ended up snowballing into each other. I end up in really cool sessions that I just never thought I would ever really be a part of.”

Along with all of this, MOD SUN and MGK’s Downfalls High arrives on Friday, Jan. 15. The upcoming musical is inspired by Machine Gun Kelly‘s pop-punk album Tickets To My Downfall. Downfalls High stars Sydney Sweeney and TikTok star Chase Hudson. As well, blink-182‘s Travis Barker co-narrates the film alongside Machine Gun Kelly.

This week, Machine Gun Kelly debut the new trailer and poster for Downfalls High. The trailer offers another look into the Grease-inspired film that depicts another side to life as a high schooler.
