This heavy metal band got to destroy the new ‘Rick And Morty’ bar
Opening a Rick And Morty-themed bar with absolutely no licensing contract was definitely not one of the brightest ideas. However, letting Gwar destroy it after being served with a cease-and-desist letter? Brilliant.
The Rick And Morty-inspired Wubba Lubba Dub Pub was originally supposed to be a pop-up bar in Washington D.C. that ran from Aug. 9 through Oct. 6. However, after only 24 hours of opening their doors, Drink Company’s infamous creation was forced to close due to licensing disagreements with Cartoon Network.
Following the closing of the Wubba Lubba Dub Pub, Drink Company decided to make the bar Gwar-themed, but not without a little help from the band. Check it out:
“They’re going to come in and kick some things around, and break some things, and let Gwar be Gwar,” Drink Company President Derek Brown said in a story with Washingtonian. “We just want to make sure we follow the letter of the law.”
Drink Company promises to release a video of the havoc soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can check out photos of the band’s destruction here.
GWAR Pub is now open and has plans to run through Halloween. The bar features stage props and costumes from the band as well as specialty drinks such as the “JagermonstaColada.”
“There are just so many cool little elements that if you are a Gwar fan, you’re going to say, ‘Holy crap,'” Brown says. “And if you’re not a Gwar fan, I think you’re going to be pretty amazed at what they’ve created.”
Last month, Cartoon Network and Turner Broadcasting came down hard on Drink Company’s Rick And Morty masterpiece. Their cease and desist letter demanded the pub pay $100,000 in licensing fees and cut the pop up’s runtime by a month.
“We’re fans creating fan art. We did something we thought was really special and that we thought they would appreciate in the long run,” Brown told Washingtonian. “We really thought in a way that would appeal to them, and it didn’t.”
Luckily, Gwar seems more than happy to be Drink Company’s newest muse.
