Here’s how a lawsuit led to Bring Me The Horizon and Amy Lee’s collab

Bring Me The Horizon have finally unveiled their new EP POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR. The highly-anticipated release includes nine tracks and collaborations with YUNGBLUD, Nova Twins, BABYMETAL and Evanescence‘s Amy Lee.

Now, Oli Sykes has revealed that BMTH’s new collab with Lee came to be after Evanescence sued them for plagiarism.

For the new EP, Lee and BMTH teamed up for the closing track “One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March Towards Your Death.” Since its release, the internet can’t seem to contain their excitement.

As it turns out, however, the collaboration came to be after an unusual turn of events. Sykes tells NME that Bring Me The Horizon were actually sued by Evanescence back in 2019. In the lawsuit, Evanescence accused the band of plagiarizing their 2017 song “Never Go Back” in BMTH’s 2019 Grimes collab “nihilist blues.”

“The weird thing about Evanescence is that we got sued by them on our last record,” Sykes says. “On ‘nihilist blues,’ we ripped off one of their verses. It was subconscious, but when it happened we were like, ‘We’re not even going to argue.’”

Lee was eventually given songwriting credit for the amo track and the lawsuit was settled. Since then, the two artists have kept in contact because of their mutual love for each other’s work. As a result, they worked together on the new POST HUMAN track.

Lee previously told Loudwire that “One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March Towards Your Death” helped her during a difficult time.

“It was just a really fun escape from that little stuck moment that I was in, and it inspired me,” Lee said. “It helped me feel, I don’t know… beautiful. The song is beautiful. That song is always gonna have a special place in my heart because I felt like, in a moment as an artist when I was stuck, another artist came along and helped me.”

Along with the Lee collaboration, POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR also includes the previously released “Parasite Eve,” “Teardrops” and their YUNGBLUD collab “Obey.” The new EP is part of BMTH’s POST HUMAN anthology which includes three more EPs that will be released over the next year.

Sykes previously shared that POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR is a protest record inspired by stories ripped straight from current headlines.

“So for the songs we are working on for this new record, we knew that they were going to be a bit more aggressive in nature,” Sykes said. “This first record is very much a protest record. It’s trying to capture the anger, sadness, frustration, fear, paranoia and everything I think we are all collectively going through right now.”

Oli Sykes has clarified his statement regarding Evanescence’s lawsuit.

“And I have to clear something up! When I said @Evanescence sued the band over ‘nihilist blues,’ that wasn’t exactly true,” he says. “Our managers just exchanged words and we offered them songwriting credits, @Amyleeev didn’t want a thing from the band in her words has nothing but love for us.”

Sykes also goes on to share that BMTH’S collab with Lee is one of his favorites off of the new EP. As well, Lee truly pushed Sykes out of his comfort zone for the new track.

“I would probably have to say butterflies, just cos I’ve been trying to get that lyric in a song for about a year haha… and because of the collaboration with @AmyLeeEV was such a blessing. She pushed me to keep the takes you hear on the record.. I didn’t think they were good..”

Amy Lee responded to Sykes on Twitter, saying that she was moved by “One Day The Only Butterflies…” the moment she heard it.

“I was shocked when you said you didn’t think they were good. The moment I heard your first vocals back is when I realized how special the song was. You pushed me out of my comfort zone too. Singing all breathy like that is way harder for me and I’m so glad you had me keep going!”
