Here’s what musicians are most anticipating in 2017

Besides obsessing over their own songs, have you ever wondered what musicians listen to? Of course you do, otherwise you wouldn’t have hit this link. We asked assorted denizens of the scene to weigh in on whose new music they’re stoked to hear in the upcoming year. From classified, inside-track info to unpredictable long shots, we’ve got the lowdown on whose tracks your favorite bands are dreaming, streaming and screaming for.

Chris Loporto, Can’t Swim

I would say the only band that I’m really up to date with and currently enjoying, and I would definitely confidently say that I would love to hear a new record, would be a band called Pinegrove. We love that band. They’re from New Jersey as well. We listen to them all the time in the van, and I would say I hope they put out something new in 2017.

Taka Moriuchi, ONE OK ROCK

5 Seconds Of Summer and Avril Lavigne. We met [5 Seconds Of Summer] the last time we toured the United States, and then we had the same producer [John Feldmann] maybe two or three years ago. After that, we [had] a tour in the U.S. [with them]. They’re on our last song [on Ambitions]. I had an interview in Japan a couple years ago, and we met Avril Lavigne the same time as the 5 Seconds Of Summer tour in Canada. I was listening to our new album, and she’s like, “Oh, this song is amazing. I want to sing on it.” [I said,] “Sure, let’s do it.” That’s it, [but] just the Japanese version—not in the United States. The United States version, [we have] All Time Low’s Alex [Gaskarth] and 5 Seconds Of Summer.

Becca Macintyre, Marmozets

Royal Blood. We’ve done quite a lot of shows with them. The boys are good friends with Ben [Thatcher], the drummer. They’re just great lads, and we both work with the same people, so we’ve always been connected, but we’re both hearing about what’s going on with each other. We just found who they’re recording with. And it’s getting a bit exciting because we’re both doing albums at the same time, and [wondering] who’s gonna be dropping it first. I like their music, it’s easy, it’s lovely.

Cory Lockwood, A Lot Like Birds

I know that Stolas are releasing a new album and I’m super-excited about that, because they’re making a similar change to us by having their drummer be their primary singer on this album.

Cody Quistad, Wage War

I’m hoping for a new Underoath album somedays.

Andy Biersack, Black Veil Brides

Wellll, I know that John Feldmann is doing some really cool stuff. I talk to him about it all the time. As a fan of late-’90s/early- 2000s punk rock, there's a lot of cool stuff he's involved in.

TJ Horansky, Sleep On It

I’m actually really looking forward to the Menzingers record, which is coming out in February. That’s a band that I really love; I think they’re really great songwriters.

JB Brubaker, August Burns Red

There’s a band called Galactic Empire putting out their self-titled first album. They’re a prog-metal Star Wars cover band. I’m not even a Star Wars fan, but their music is amazing.

Matt Tuck, Bullet For My Valentine

I’m a bit out of touch with what’s coming out, but I hear System Of A Down are back together making a new one, and after 10 years I’m definitely excited for that.

Brann Dailor, Mastodon

I’ve been in a bubble and totally out of touch with what’s coming out, but I know Queens Of The Stone Age are writing, and if that comes out in 2017 it’ll definitely be high on my list.

Jade Puget, AFI

Depeche Mode. For sure. I’m excited about that.

Chad Gilbert, New Found Glory

The new Tigers Jaw. I got a little sneak peek listen, and it was awesome. You have those ideas of what you want your favorite bands to do next, and they did it. I’ve heard Hop Along are getting ready to do a new record. I also keep getting sneak peeks of the new Paramore album.

Cam Boucher, Sorority Noise

The Menzingers record is really incredible. I’m excited about the possibility of a new Turnover record. There’s this band Danny Through Junior; it’s Sam Skinner, who plays guitar in Pinegrove, and this is his solo record. It’s absolutely stunning. People Like You will have a new record next year. I’m excited for that. I think PWR BTTM might have a new record next year, and maybe Julien Baker, too.

Joe Taylor, Knuckle Puck

Saves The Day.

Ben Barlow, Neck Deep

Knuckle Puck are always an exciting one. Copacetic was insane. New Found Glory, too. They’re still legends and one of my favorite bands ever. I know the State Champs boys are working on stuff, as well.

Kellin Quinn, Sleeping With Sirens

I think we’re always excited to hear music from bands we tour with. I know State Champs are going to start working on new music. I just love all the bands we go out with. Whoever is making records right now, I’m excited to hear them.

Ollie Baxxter, Broadside

State Champs. They’re killing it, so I would love to see what they do next.

Ryan Locke, Seaway

Knuckle Puck's new record. We did our first-ever tour with them; they've been real good friends throughout the growth of our band. As we're starting to write our new record, they're starting to do the same on this tour. It's kind of cool how we've grown up together, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll be putting out next year.

Andrew McMahon, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness

I'm really looking forward to what Jack Antonoff and Bleachers do next.

Brian Sella, the Front Bottoms

I know that the Gnarwolves are coming out with a new album. They’re a U.K. punk band. We’re actually on the road with them right now, so I’m stoked on that one.

Shane Told, Silverstein

Is Brand New going to finally put out a fucking record? Because I’d love to hear that… I’m crossing my fingers for an Underoath record. I don’t know if they’re doing it. I know they’re doing more shows with Bring Me The Horizon, so I would be excited to see that—my friends in Underoath back with the original lineup again, I would love to see that.

Tom May, the Menzingers

I’m really excited to hear Tigers Jaw’s new record and the new Flatliners record. I can’t wait for both of those records to come out.

John O’Callaghan, the Maine

There’s a band called Cigarettes After Sex that just released a new song—I don’t know if that’s foreshadowing to them releasing a new record, but I’m really excited for that. I have a great buddy that goes by the name the Chain Gang Of 1974 that just released a new song; he is putting out an album soon. The Japanese House—they just released an EP, but they need to put out a full-length at some point. Granddaddy just put out a new song.

Chadwick Johnson, Hundredth

This band called the National, they’re probably one of my top five favorite bands and they’re putting out a new record next year, supposedly. So I’m stoked for that, and I also have some honorable mentions, too. Arcade Fire’s putting out a record, which is gonna be cool. A band called the Excess and Lower Than Atlantis, those are kind of what’s on my radar to check out next year.
