"I just don't want to write songs that make people sad"—Neck Deep talk 'Life's Not Out To Get You'

In the latest issue of AP, Neck Deep sit down with contributing writer Andrew Kelham Twitter to talk about their pop-punk masterpiece, Life’s Not Out To Get You. On the LP’s lyrical content, frontman Ben Barlow comments, “I just don’t want to write songs that make people feel sad. I don’t want to write songs that make people down and make them think their life sucks, especially with a lot of kids self-harming. That is fucked. I don’t want to write a song that someone feels they want to self-harm to.”

“The lyrics on this new album in particular are about a positive state of mind,” [Barlow] explains. “Sure, they appeal to some genre tropes, but I just don’t want to write songs that make people feel sad. I don’t want to write songs that make people down and make them think their life sucks, especially with a lot of kids self-harming. That is fucked. I don’t want to write a song that someone feels they want to self-harm to. I want to write songs that make kids not want to do that and see that life is good. Yeah, you have to go through shit, but you make it out and you don’t have to cut yourself on the way through. That’s what I want to put across.”
