'Incredibles' director talks the possibility of a third movie

Incredibles 2 recently made its theatrical debut, and it looks as though a third film could potentially happen.

Fans have waited for 14 years for a sequel to the first movie to come out, and now that it’s officially here, some can’t help but wonder if there could ever be a third, and it appears that director Brad Bird isn’t entirely opposed to the idea.

While an official answer to the film getting a third chapter hasn’t been confirmed, a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly suggests that Bird wouldn’t mind exploring the characters and plot ideas he didn’t get time to look into during the making of the sequel.

You might recall Pixar swapping the release date of the film with another massive movie, Toy Story 4, back in 2016. Due to that swap, Bird lost an entire year off the making of the film, which severely changed how he was going about the making of the sequel.

“You couldn’t linger on,” he shares with EW. “It’s like the episode of I Love Lucy when she’s got the candies piling up on the conveyer belt. This film was like that. They took a year off our schedule, so if an idea didn’t work quickly, you had to just kill the darling and move onto the next. And I killed like a city full of darlings.”

With such a short time frame, there were things that were cut from the film, so it wouldn’t be entirely crazy to think that Bird would make another movie if given the chance. Bird hasn’t ruled it out either, saying:

“You know, you never say never, because there might be an opportunity to use it. Maybe the idea shows up in a different film,” Bird said. “There was an idea I had for an animated version of the Spirit that I ended up using in the Iron Giant. You never know how these things are going to get repurposed. There were a lot of ideas that we had on this film that could be [used] . . . whether it’s another Incredibles film, or something else.”

While we’re not sure a third movie will happen, we can at least rejoice in the film’s sequel. Following everyone’s favorite family of superheroes, the film’s official synopsis reads:

“Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered.”

Incredibles 2 is out now, and it’s making quite the impression. As Comicbook.com reports, the film has earned a massive $180 million in its first weekend and shattered the previous box office record of “highest animated film” opening that was set by Finding Dory in 2016.
