Instagram announced today a new feature that shows a green dot next to your friends’ profile pictures when they’re active.

The dot will be shown in various spaces within the app, including DMs and friend list, so you know when the people you follow are online.

According to the statement, the “update gives you the ability to have more of those realtime conversations while giving you the control to hide your status altogether.”

Instagram notes that you will only be able to see status for friends that also follow you or people you have talked to in Direct.

However, if you’re not too keen on this update, it’s really easy to turn it off.

Here are the steps: click the Options icon on your profile, then scroll down to Settings and all the way to “Show Activity Status.” Slide to turn that off and you won’t be able to see your friends’ status and they won’t be able to see yours.
