Instagram appears to rip off Pinterest in new feature

It appears that Instagram is copying Pinterest with its latest “Collections” feature.

According to Techcrunch, the social media platform is working on the new feature which will allow users to organize their saved posts into groups and then share those collections with their friends.

Collections” would also allow for people to add their own posts if the owner of the collection makes it public.

The new feature discovery was found by a software developer Jane Manchun Wong in the code inside of Instagram for Android.

It isn’t clear when the feature would roll out. However, it sounds a lot like Pinterest boards that are fairly popular for the same use. The feature could possible hurt Pinterest. Users would be able to organize their content the same way in a medium that may seem more convenient.

In other Instagram news, a glitch recently caused many users to lose many followers overnight. They’ve since resolved the issue.

Also, soon Instagram users might soon be allowed to use the direct messaging feature from desktop, which currently is not available to users. Instagram confirmed they are not yet testing it publicly, but it might happen sooner than later.

“The feature looks like it will use an Instagram.com/direct/…. URL structure. If the feature becomes popular, perhaps Facebook will break it out with its own Direct destination website similar to https://www.messenger.com, which launched in 2015,” says TechCrunch.

“Instagram began testing a standalone Direct app last year, but it’s yet to be officially launched and doesn’t seem exceedingly popular.”

All of these new features are seriously transforming the platform from merely just a photo-sharing social media application.

What do you think of the new collections feature? Do you think you’d actually use it, or is it just a rip off of Pinterest? Sound off in the comments!
