Jack White addresses homophobic incident at recent show

Jack White evokes the Beatles in a new statement decrying a homophobic incident that occurred during his show in Canada last week, the former White Stripe saying he’s “disappointed” venue staff tried to stop a kiss between two women.

Concertgoer Allyson MacIvor says an usher told her she wasn’t allowed to kiss her female companion last Friday, Nov. 2, at White’s concert at Edmonton’s Rogers Place, according to CBC News. “I embraced my girlfriend, and some staff member came in between us,” explains the Canadian Jack White fan, “and she said, ‘This is not allowed here.'”

With a “very violating and invasive” gesture, per MacIvor, the venue employee placed her hand between the two women and asked them to stop. But on Instagram Wednesday morning, White confronted the news with Beatlemania:

“This photo is a lesbian couple sharing a kiss at a Beatles concert in 1964 while the rest of the crowd screamed for the band,” he says in the caption. “This is one of my favorite photos because of how beautiful the situation is; they are hiding in plain sight. Its 2018 now and two people expressing affection shouldn’t have to hide.” See the post below:

The musician continues, “The news that two women were stopped from kissing during my show in Edmonton really disappointed me. At the next show in Calgary I dedicated the song ‘love interruption’ to the two women and encouraged everyone in the crowd to kiss their loved ones. Let’s promote love and acceptance wherever and whenever we can.”

After the incident, MacIvor says the usher escorted the couple to a venue manager who “apologized profusely, but it still didn’t help the incident and the hurt that came out of this.” White is currently touring behind his recent solo album.
