James Gunn in talks to write and direct 'Suicide Squad 2'

Talk about a turn of events.

James Gunn, who you might remember was fired from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has just penned a deal with Warner Bros. and DC to write, and possibly direct, the new Suicide Squad movie.

Currently, Gunn has closed a deal to write the script of the forthcoming movie, but, so far into the production process, no one has signed a deal to direct, so he could actually be in the running to do both.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that “inside sources” claim that Gunn is currently not wanting to develop a “sequel” to the franchise, rather, he will be creating a new take on the DC film entirely.

The supposed “sequel that’s not really a sequel” is slated to feature some familiar faces, including Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, and, of course, the Joker.

Whether or not Gunn pens the script and directs the film, the new deal with Warner Bros. is Gunn’s first project since leaving Disney/Marvel Studio. The reason, as THR reports, is due to old controversial tweets that resurfaced back in July.

Following the news of Gunn’s involvement with the series, the film’s original director David Ayer chimed in on his thought’s of Gunn’s involvement with the film, saying:

“I think it’s an incredibly brave and smart move by the studio,” he wrote. “James is the right man for the job!”

It’s been previously confirmed that Michael De Luca is set to produce Suicide Squad 2, joining writer Gavin O’Connor on the sequel, which stars “Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.
