The new movie will find Phoenix following in the Joker footsteps of Jared Leto, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) will direct the film, with Martin Scorsese attached as an executive producer.

THR reports the budget at around $55 million, highlighting the lower-than-usual figure for a superhero blockbuster. The standalone movie will aim for elements of “crime drama” while being “more experimental in tone and content.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s new Joker picture will present the “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” in a reported movie premise obtained by Vulture.
