John Cena may be taking another hiatus from the ring for a return to the silver screen in the near future, with the wrestler now in talks to join the upcoming The Suicide Squad reboot.

We may have lost Will Smith, but producers seem to be widening their net outside of Hollywood for new cast members.

Some of Cena’s recent roles include Bumblebee, Blockers, Ferdinand, and Daddy's Home Two.

Variety notes Cena could potentially join Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Idris Elba in the new film, with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn from the first film and upcoming Birds Of Prey.

James Gunn will helm the movie with both writing and directing credits, and it’s expected to begin production this fall and release sometime in 2021, according to Variety. Gunn was also recently rehired by Disney for the third installment of Guardians Of The Galaxy after initially being let go following the resurface of offensive tweets.

Following publication of the Variety article, the writer followed up the post with more information.

Cena’s possible role in The Suicide Squad was teased in a follow-up tweet to the original story, as well as previous interest in fellow wrestler Dave Bautista best known recently for his Guardians role.

“Couple things I forgot to add on this: First this was the role originally intended by for Bautista but due to his massive work schedule, he had to pass. Also I couldn’t confirm but believe Cena would be playing Peacemaker in the film,” the tweet reads.
Oh, and a return from Jared Leto as the Joker isn’t off the table either. New photos surfaced a few weeks back showing Quinn being kicked out by the Joker just as Leto teases his possible return. However, it’s still unclear if he’s the one fulfilling the role.
