Joyce Manor - Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired

Joyce Manor

Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired

This review originally ran in AP 286.

Sure, the record’s barely longer than the average lovemaking session between a member of a pop-screamo band and one of their future Is Anyone Up? submissions. But on Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired, Joyce Manor accomplish in 13 minutes what takes lesser bands whole careers to do. They both expand the current boundaries of their internet-chosen subgenre (the Jawbreaker-esque pop-punk of “Comfortable Clothes”) and push themselves into completely new sonic territory (the lo-fi, synth-bass-and-drum-machine-assisted “See How Tame I Can Be,” the Smiths jangle of “Bride Of Usher”). The results are extraordinary. How can a band this young be this adept at editing their songs down to the barest of essentials? How can a band this new write such compelling material? How in the hell is a cover song (the Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star”) the best track on the entire goddamn album? We have no definite answers; instead, we’ll just keep listening.
