Motion City Soundtrack’s Justin Courtney Pierre is back with “In The Drink”

It’s been nearly two years since Motion City Soundtrack bid their farewell at an after show at Riot Fest Chicago, and we’re still not over it.

Luckily for us, former frontman Justin Courtney Pierre is still making music, gifting the world with his new single “In The Drink.”

“It just kind of happened,” Pierre tells Billboard. “At the end of the day I didn’t know what else to do other than write music. I think I flirted with the idea of become an accountant, but then my wife told me that’s not a reality. That’s work. And she was right…And I had been kicking around the idea of doing something like this for a while, anyway. I had just never pulled the trigger.”

The track is produced by fellow former MCS member Joshua Cain, which Pierre felt was a natural progression in their working relationship.

“I’ve been working with him for years and he’s been doing more producing and he’s really good at it,” Pierre continues via Billboard. “I said, ‘Why don’t you produce it? It’s kind of like we’re doing something together, but this time I call all the shots at the end of the day,’ and he liked that idea.”

Ideas were not in short supply with Pierre who revealed his post-MCS world consists of focusing on the art step-by-step.

“What’s nice about this is I don’t have to ask anybody for permission or get four people to agree on whatever we’re doing,” he continues. “I can just do my ideas whether they’re stupid or not, for better or for worse. I thought, ‘OK, so if this is the only record I ever do, great. I’m just gonna do it exactly the way I want it.'”

Pierre’s album of the same name, In The Drink, features the singer playing every instrument except drums, trumpet and backing vocals. The drums were provided by David Jarnstrom (Gratitude, BNLX).

In The Drink will be released via Epitaph Records Oct. 12, and pre-orders are available here.
