Keith Buckley says new Damned Things music will be "the truest sound we're capable of"
Maybe we shouldn't get too excited about a new Damned Things EP just yet.
AP caught up with Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley to ask him about the status of the Damned Things, the other kickass rock outfit he fronts, starring Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy, Anthrax guitar god Scott Ian, bassist Josh Newton and Rob Caggiano (Volbeat).
In December, Hurley told the ‘100 Words Or Less' podcast that the band had recorded five songs for an EP, but Buckley wants to manage the fans' expectations, accordingly.

“While we have more than enough material for an EP, we are still very much in the 'demo' phase,” Buckley told AP, “rearranging riffs and trying different things vocally. And though it's a little too early to say what the next release will sound like comprehensively, we've taken a different approach to writing this time around. Things are more atmospheric and weirder. We've loosened up a bit and learned to let our major influences speak. In that way, it's the truest sound we're capable of.”
The band dates back to 2008, when Trohman and Ian started writing music together, but the supergroup played their first show in 2010. The band's debut album, Ironiclast, was released almost exactly six years ago—Dec. 14, 2010. Afterwards, the band played some shows in 2011.
That debut album sold 6,200 copies on the first week it was released and also reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.
Since 2012, however, the band has been mostly quiet—until now. Trohman and Hurley have, of course, been active with Fall Out Boy while Every Time I Die released their eighth studio album, Low Teens, in September. Anthrax released their eleventh studio album, For All Kings, in February.
However, near the band’s six year anniversary of Ironiclast, Hurley began teasing the possibility of new work.
“I recorded five songs for an EP with The Damned Things—I don’t think we’ll be playing, Anthrax is still touring on their last record. ETID just put out their new record, uh, who else? Josh Newton I think has been playing lately. He tech’d for Joe for awhile, I’m not sure if he’ll be back when we’re back. So you know, that’s all over the place,” said Hurley.
