The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame exhibit Never Give Up: Alternative Press Magazine at 30 only has one week left in its run, until the beginning of April arrives.
If you've got a chance to be in Cleveland and check it out, you should; where else will you see all the unprinted photos of bands we've covered in the past 30 years, including Beastie Boys and Nirvana? But, if you don't have a chance to go, here's an APTV special that shows off the history of our magazine.
“We never thought we'd be in [The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame], ever,” says Mike Shea, the CEO and founder of AP. “It's been a really crazy experience digging up the old archives and the old pieces and parts of what made AP start.”
AP's art director, Christopher Benton, talks about redesigning the logo and designing his first front page. “I literally hand cut the lettering and the logo, because I hadn't used a computer yet,” he says. “After that, I presented it [to Shea] and he said, 'You've got the job.'”
The exhibit shows off different articles, columns and photos that have been published in AP over the years, along with stories from the magazine's production.
“The whole thing is that it was an inclusive clubhouse,” says editor-in-chief Jason Pettigrew. “Alternative Press is, at its best, essentially a mix tape.”
