LESANE defies the constraints of genre in new video “HOUDINI”—watch

U.K. musician LESANE has dropped a brand-new music video for his track “HOUDINI.” Steady, pop-punk-inspired guitar riffs pull listeners into the song. Pop-infused drum beats and bass are then added into the mix, creating a perfect blend of alternative sounds that support the driving melodies. This backing crafts a solid stage for LESANE’s vocals to command.

The visual for the song, directed by Nicholas Jandora (blackbear, theHxliday), is equally unpredictable. The video starts with LESANE, a UnitedMasters artist partner, meditating in a van that could have rolled straight out of the ‘70s. He’s then transported to a modern-day skate park, confidently performing for the camera as skaters whirl around him.

It’s impossible to confine “HOUDINI” into one sonic box, and that’s just how LESANE likes it.

“I describe myself as genreless,” LESANE told REPEAT Magazine in 2020. “One moment I could be on a melodic Cloud-rap record like ‘iCarly,’ but then I can switch it up to [an] emo trap record like ‘Graveyards.’ Personally, I love my emo records the most because it helps me connect with people that go through the same things as me.”

LESANE told Alternative Press how “HOUDINI” ushers in a new era for the musician, one where he’s even more unafraid to take risks with his sound.

“‘HOUDINI’ was really one of the first songs I made when I decided to change my sound completely,” LESANE says to AltPress. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could make a record that’s outside of my comfort zone and still have people rock with it. ‘HOUDINI’ is a fun vibe and also an insight into what’s about to come with these new records I’m working on.”

“HOUDINI” was already gaining attention when it was released July 16. A clip of the track went viral on LESANE’s TikTok before the official drop, earning a staggering 4.3 million views to date. Much like the serendipitous success of “HOUDINI,” LESANE’s whole career seemed destined from the start.

“Music started for me when I was very young,” LESANE says to REPEAT. “I couldn’t write lyrics, so I would beatbox and hum melodies. Eventually, as time went on, the melodies I made started to have words. Then the words started to make sense. I don’t really remember when I fell in love with music specifically, but I remember when I was 12, my cousin Chami was about to leave my grandmother’s house, but he seen me tapping on the table making melodies. He looked at me and said, ‘One day, you’re going to be a musician.’ He paused for a second… then closed the door behind him. Two days later, he died, and that was the last time I saw him. Naturally, his words held much more weight, so I think on a subconscious level, that led to my curiosity with music.”

“HOUDINI” lyrics:

Pop two tabs, I don’t feel a damn thing
I get drunk just to drown my sins
Started meditating just to see what it can bring,
‘Cause I don’t wanna lose my mind
I’m way too fucked up tonight, you’re just like my kryptonite
Black boy rock star shit, my vibe
In this life, I take my time
You won’t understand it
Whatever happens just promise that you won’t panic
I think I heard something moving inside the attic
I’m like Houdini, I disappear like I’m magic

I disappear like I’m magic,
I hide my feelings ‘cause my feelings feel tragic
I’m still alive but I feel I barely manage, I barely manage
I’m fucked up, had too much to drink
I’m fucked up, I threw up in the sink
Do you trust us? There’s a lot that we can bring
I think your luck’s up, time to wash away your sins
I’m a Black boy, that’s a Black boy rock star,
Too stoned, paranoid ‘bout the cop cars
Black boy, that’s a Black boy rock star,
Too stoned, paranoid ‘bout the cop cars
Save me from demons before they take me for no reason
Save me from demons before they take me for no reason

Pop two tabs, I don’t feel a damn thing
I get drunk just to drown my sins
Started meditating just to see what it can bring
‘Cause I don’t wanna lose my mind
I’m way too fucked up tonight, you’re just like my kryptonite
Black boy rock star shit, my vibe
In this life, I take my time
You won’t understand it
Whatever happens just promise that you won’t panic
I think I heard something moving inside the attic
I’m like Houdini, I disappear like I’m magic
