The stark new device is being presented as a “simple, 4G LTE phone with a beautiful black & white matte E-ink display,” according to the creators' Indiegogo campaign for the Light Phone 2. With just standard phone and messaging capabilities—plus a few unobtrusive necessities like an alarm clock and contacts list—the new phone aims to harness sleek smartphone design into a package that cuts back on the need to obsessively check Twitter, Facebook, and other apps vying for constant attention.

“By allowing you to leave behind your smartphone, it encourages you to spend quality time doing the things you love the most, free of distraction. We call this 'going light',” the campaign reads. “The Light Phone 2 brings a few essential tools, like messaging and an alarm clock, so it's even easier to ditch your smartphone more often, or for good. It’s a phone that actually respects you.”

Light Phone 2 has yet to enter manufacturing—you can back the crowdfunding campaign now for expected delivery in 2019. The upstart's first model, the Light Phone, was even more willingly rudimentary—it could literally only make phone calls. What a novel idea.
