Mark Hoppus hates on magic, karaoke in new interview

Mark Hoppus is an accomplished vocalist, but does he like covering the hits in front of strangers? Absolutely not.

Hoppus sat down with NME to talk Simple Creatures, but he was called out by bandmate Alex Gaskarth for his hatred of karaoke and stage magic.

“Mark takes a hard stance on things that people love,” Gaskarth says.

Hoppus came clean, admitting his hatred for sleight-of-hand trickery.

“I hate magic,” Hoppus says. “Magic is the absolute worst. It’s just some asshole lying to you in front of your face so that other people can go like, ‘Oh, he got you.’”

Gaskarth pointed out his friend’s hypocrisy due to his love of magic-inspired movies.

“It makes no sense because he loves Disney,” Gaskarth says. “And their motto is like, ‘Can you feel the magic’ or something like that.”

The duo also discussed their first meeting, including how Gaskarth’s hair had changed over the years.

“The first time that we met was in the studio that Alex came into to work on an All Time Low song,” Hoppus says. “Alex sat on the couch and had a giant laptop on his lap, and his hair was kind of big and had a lot of bangs over the face.”

Gaskarth agreed, saying there’s “less of that now. Same look, but subtle, more subdued.”

The band went on to talk about responsibilities and being teenagers at heart despite their adult lives.

“We play in bands, so [we] don’t ever have to take life too seriously, luckily,” Hoppus says. “Although we’re both married, and I have kids, so we have actual responsibilities as human beings now. Other than that, playing in bands is a license to be an idiot your whole life, I think.”
