The fast-food giant bearing its signature golden arches has announced via their site that artificial preservatives, colors and flavors are officially out of McDonald’s seven classic hamburgers.

Specifically, the company removed colors and preservatives from their American cheese slices, signature Big Mac sauce and their regular and sesame seed buns. They did note that their pickles still contain preservatives, and customers have the option to remove those at any time.

The change was implemented as a result of consumers, especially millennials, desiring higher quality food. “We know quality choices are important to our customers, [and] this latest positive change to our classic burgers demonstrates our committed journey to leading with the customer and building a better McDonald’s,” McDonald’s U.S. president Chris Kempczinski says.

This trend is not new, however; fast-food restaurants have been hard at work within the past few years to replace preservatives with natural ingredients. Wendy’s, for example, switched to natural-cut sea salt fries in 2010 and prides itself on its fresh, never frozen beef. McDonald’s just switched from frozen to fresh in May of 2018.

Even with these changes, they may still get a little more heat from Wendy’s Twitter account. While preservatives have been removed from the burgers, there is still work to be done. McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and many signature sandwiches still contain artificial colors and preservatives.

Previously, McDonald’s announced that their Chicken McNuggets are free of artificial flavors, colors and preservatives, so it’s time to dunk your chicken in every sauce available. Baby spinach and kale leaves have also enhanced their salads since being added in 2016.

In the future, McDonald’s plans to have a full menu free of preservatives. They also hope to exclusively use cage-free eggs by 2025. Fortunately, the chain says these changes will not cause any increases in price. We’re lovin’ that.
