Me First And The Gimme Gimmes

Are We Not Men? We Are Diva!

The latest by punk-cover supergroup Me First And The Gimme Gimmes gives decades’ worth of hits by the ladies (and, um, Boy George) the full Me First treatment, and for once, singing along to said tunes isn’t a source of shame and mockery. As usual, the Gimmes—flaunting a killer band and the stellar vocals of Spike Slawson (Swingin’ Utters)—take these oft-tired numbers to FlavorTown, from Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” with a Celtic stomp a la Dropkick Murphys, to the full-on shred of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” to the stunning, fragile, ukulele rendition of Madonna’s “Crazy For You.” Whether Slawson’s belting the Carpenters’ “Top Of The World” or rocking the Auto-Tune on Cher’s “Believe,” he and the Gimmes achieve bona fide diva-dom, estrogen aside.
