Melanie Martinez explores horrors of boarding school in ‘K-12’ trailer

Melanie Martinez has confirmed her upcoming film and album K-12 with a new trailer and announced some select screenings for the movie.

Previously, Martinez has been teasing us a ton about the project.

She shared the first teaser and changed the layout of her website. Now, when fans go to her homepage, a large building appears as a pink school bus drives across the lower left-hand corner of the screen. From there, fans can enter the site and either watch the two trailers so far or listen to her music.

In the first teaser, Martinez can be seen entering an eerie, pastel classroom. On Instagram, the teaser was accompanied by the caption, “When the bell rings, you must be in your assigned seat…”

Since the first teaser’s release, fans believe the short video and reconstructed website may have something to do with a film and concept album that the artist teased back in 2017. As previously reported, Martinez said the project was still on after two years of silence.

“Been dying to give you all an Album/Movie update but wanted to wait until I was sure the film would be done in time,” Martinez said in an Instagram post back in February. “The album has been done for like 2 years now I’ve just been waiting to finish up the movie. Some of you keep asking when singles are going to drop and the answer is they’re not. I’m putting out a concept album and an hour and a half long movie. Still has to go through VFX, Sound and Color for the next few months then a couple [of] months of waiting and preparing that I have no control over. So it’s safe to say it’ll come out END OF SUMMER. Sending love, Can’t wait till you all can see/hear what I’ve been workin’ real hard on for the past 3 years!”

Additionally, Melanie Martinez confirmed the combination in an interview with Billboard that same year.

“It’s all of the videos together of the next record, all thirteen, with dialogue and whatnot in between connecting all of them together,” Martinez said. “And I’m directing it and writing it and styling it and doing the makeup.”

Martinez also revealed the album cover for K-12. The cover emulates the aesthetic of Marinez’s new website. You can check that out below.

Then, Martinez unleashed teaser No. 2, which shows the singer in a dazed state until she’s jostled by her friends. The trio makes their way through a school hallway with books in hand as one friend complains of stomach pains. The reason for the pains is soon revealed, which you can see below.

After that, she dropped the third trailer that actually revealed the date for the release, and showed Martinez and a “classmate” sneaking a smoke in front of the school teased in her previous posts.

The pair walk down the path discussing their past lives together and coming up with some interesting scenarios.

The video furthers the rumor that the new album, K-12, is the concept album and film mentioned by Martinez in 2017.

You can see that teaser below.

Now, we finally know what’s going on. Martinez has confirmed the full-length film and the accompanying album K-12 will be dropping in September and shared a bit more about the filming process.

The musical film will officially premiere in Los Angeles on September 3 at the Arclight Cinerama Dome. On September 5, there will be a premiere at New York’s AMC Empire 25 in Times Square. On that same night, there will be global screenings around the world for one-night-only.

Martinez stars at Cry Baby in the film, who is both “strong and sensitive.” According to a press release, she is “sent off to a disturbing sleepaway school hidden underneath a grandiose facade”. It was also written and directed by Martinez and marks her directorial debut.

“My heart is incredibly full,” says Martinez, “To be able to show people what I’ve been working on these past few years, and to be given the opportunity to create a feature film and have full creative control over every aspect of this project is a huge blessing and I’m beyond grateful.”

You can see the full-length trailer for K-12 below.
