Mike Posner on walking across America: "We have to enjoy each step"

On April 7, Warped Tour alum Mike Posner revealed he would be walking across America. Starting April 15, Posner would kick off his adventure in Asbury Park, New Jersey and continue across the country until he reached Venice Beach, California.

Posner took to Instagram last month to reveal the news of his journey, saying he “wanted to go on an adventure.”

Thank you guys so much for all the support. After prepping for more than seven months, I woke up this morning at 7AM, packed up all my supplies, returned my keys to the landlord, and began driving from Los Angeles to New Jersey. I will arrive in Jersey in six days. Then, one week from today, on Monday, April 15, 2019, in Asbury Park near Convention Hall, I’m going to put my left foot in front of my right and begin walking back across America back to California. I hope to finish in Venice Beach before Christmas by jumping into the Pacific Ocean with all of my friends to celebrate 🙂 Tag a friend you’d like to join the walk with.

Using his Instagram to document his walk, Posner has been sharing updates with fans and friends, inviting them to walk with him on his adventure.

Drew Binsky met up with Posner earlier this month to find out exactly what inspired him to take this long walk across America.

“It was something that I put off for a long time,” Posner explains. “I wanted to do it for five years and it wasn’t really until after my dad died, and really when my friend Avicii died that I knew… My life is now, one day I’m gonna die too. And everyone wants you to forget you’re gonna die, cuz if you forget you’re gonna die then you’ll waste your life working for their company, spending money on what they’re selling.”

And the most rewarding part of his journey so far?

“The people I’ve met, you know? People walk with me pretty much every day.”

The journey hasn’t been easy, but Posner is hoping to spread a message to those who walk with him.

“You don’t have to play by the rules. I’m supposed to record an album, tour the album, record another album, tour the album. Yeah, I just said screw it, I’m gonna go walk across America you know? [Laughs.] Lots of people tried to tell me not to do it, it was a bad idea, it’s not good for my career, this and that. But there’s never a good time to do what you want to do, you know? Life is now. If you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and you open them back up… this is your life. This is it. I think my biggest message would be, life is now.”
